We are trying to figure out if we are paying our wonderful Creative Director fairly.
In the spirit of "I'll show you mine if you show me yours," we are paying him $60K per year in salary, plus a profit sharing plan where the agency principal contributes up to 15% of a person's salary per year (she has contributed the maximum for many years.) So, his total compensation package would be about $69,000 per year with the salary and the profit sharing. Is this too low??
Our Creative Director has about 20 years' experience in the business and we are located in Houston, TX. We specialize in print, plus a little web, and he does no broadcast-related work.
I would really appreciate input from other agencies in major metropolitan areas (I'm curious to hear where you are located) that also focus on print.
Much obliged!

In Portland, Oregon, according to the Portland Advertising Agency Salary Survey for 2000, a CD with 10+ years experience receives within the range of $84,000 to $60,000 (low) with an average of $73,143 annually. Plus, a range of bonus between $15,000 to $2,000 (low) with an average of $9,000 for bonus.
$60,000 is low, even for Secondwind Network's salary survey which states $68,000 for an average.

I recommend you go to salary.com. This site you can type in your city, zip, job title, etc. to get the appropriate salary recommendation.

Way too low for California/Silicon Valley. They make 80-100K here.

I question salary.com myself. I would like to know exactly how they derive their information. We are probably the largest web development company in our metro area and we've never been contacted.
BUT...here's our current status for web development jobs...curious if there are others out there in the web arena as well that can give me input: . Creative Director w/about 9-10 yrs. experience - $90K + bonus, stock & benes. . Sr. Designer w/3-6 yrs. expereince - $65K + bonus, stock & benes. . Designer w/1-3 yrs. experience $35K-$50K + bonus, stock & benes.
Any input would be MOST helpful. We've just gone through a serious increase in wages and I think we are extremely more than fair. However, I want to be confident that I will not have to do this again.
Thanks

What's most important here is what is he worth to you. I have found the pay range in our industry to be across the spectrum. It sounds if he is under paid if anything but it really depends on the size firm and responsibilities he has. Salary.com can help you get to the ballpark but it sounds like you are there if you are a small firm. Ask yourself what it takes to replace them then you will know what he is worth.

60K is too low in Philadelphia. Over the past five years our CD's earned 85 - 125k plus bonus.

I see you are in Arizona - I would have thought from your salary ranges you were in SF Bay Area or Silicon Valley!! Your ranges are very similar to ours. (The Creative Director would be a little low here, especially with that much experience.)
We just went through a salary equity phase ourselves. Bringing staff up to speed with the market so they wouldn't be tempted to look elsewhere is now catching up with us. We have to drive higher revenues to maintain profit margins. Or revisit our pricing models to client. And this 'dot-com demise' has put a serious wrench in sales around this valley.
I would say you are very fair & equitable with your salary ranges. How's business in general in your area? Has the unstable economy affected you? (That question is for everybody...)

There's a discussion of their methodology if you dig around on their site. As one who's worked in the temp industry for a company which put out these surveys, I can say that it *looks* sound. Whether reality matches theory is, of course, always open to question ...
