We recognize (do we ever!) the importance of having a great receptionist. Our current receptionist has been with us a while and while she isnít interested in moving on to other areas of the business, weíd like to keep her motivated. As usual money talks. I wondered what agencies are paying receptionists these days? Perks? We are currently paying $2200 (Canadian dollars) monthly. For this she welcomes clients and suppliers, does some C&P work (timesheets, some AP entering), keeps vacation schedules and orders stationery. Any input would be much appreciated.

I have to say, here in the south, we do not pay anywhere near as much as you guys are paying. I rely on our intern programs through local colleges and also co-op programs through the local high schools. Also, when I do not have either of the above mention, I call on a temp service & it is still not that much. I'm sure it is relative to the cost of living.

The range for a receptionist for an agency with capitalized billing equivalent from $10 to $20 million ranges from 18,000 to 55,000 with 33,600 being the average, according to The Rubel Surveys.

I am curious to see what agencies are providing for vacation, sick, personal and holiday time off, since salary is sometimes less important than paid time off.

We pay $29,000 in the SF Bay Area. We have tried to get someone for less and it is really true that you get what you pay for and not worth trying to skimp. The receptionist is your first impression with any client and therefore so critical.

We offer the same as our regular employees. 2 weeks paid vacation at beginning, 2 1/2 weeks at year 3, 3 weeks at year 5 (vacation time is earned, 1 day per month up to 10 days, yet they may take it at anytime, if they terminate early they owe back). 10 paid holidays a year (although we usually close down addition days at xmas, this year closed Fri, Mon, and Tues), 10 sick days, 5 personal days, and all the other bennies the other staff members receive.

Does your company offer a bonus or 401K matching for full-time employees?

We do. Although, it is always based on the profitability of the agency and determined at the end of the year. Then we may share in the profits with the staff in any of the following 3 ways: 1- contribute to a profit share program (all employees benefit) 2- match 401k funds (only employees with 401k benefit - although we have 100% participation from eligible employees) 3- give bonus checks.

We will do any one or mix of those.

In addition, we have taken a percentage of the stock of the company and created a profit participation program, and issued "phantom" stock against it to every employee, 3 year vesting program. This is a "partner" program so that every employee has "ownership" in the agency, and does reap the benefit of the increased value of their shares. Hence the name, Just Partners!!! More information than you requested, but I hope you find it helpful.

What are the bonuses based on? Is it a percentage of salary, performance, years of service, or something else?

We base bonuses on the payroll percentage pool? If this is not clear, you are welcome to email me or call me at 800-273-8483 and I will be happy to better explain.
