Here's what you need to run Clients & Profits X Clients & Profits X is available for both Macintosh and Windows-based personal computers. The Clients & Profits X software is highly compatible with most combinations of hardware and Mac/Windows operating systems made in the last several years. Clients & Profits X is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 (or above) and Windows Vista/XP. Updated October 13, 2008

About performance Unlike graphic programs, the workstation's processor speed and RAM have less affect on performance because Clients & Profits X is disk-based. Therefore, the speed of the workstation is less important than the throughput of the file server and the network. For this reason a workstation running Clients & Profits X can be moderately powered and still run acceptably fast. However, users who print long production or financial reports, or who print reports constantly, will need a faster computer.

Mac OS or Windows? Whether to use a Mac or a PC to run Clients & Profits X is not a technical issue because the performance is just about identical on either system. This makes the decision whether to use Mac or PCs a matter of personal (or company) preference. Installation of the Clients & Profits software is no harder on either system. Overall, the number of technical issues we handle at the Clients & Profits Helpdesk are about the same for both systems.

Note regarding Intel Macs: Macs featuring Intel processors cannot run versions of Clients & Profits prior to C&P X, since they no longer support the Classic environment.  For more information, check here.

Windows Vista: C&P X will run on Windows Vista, though in order to connect to a database hosted on an Apple Xserve, the Business or Ultimate edition are needed due to the extra networking tools.  To do so, check out our tech note here.

These general recommendations are only suggestions. Your performance will vary based on number of concurrent users, the availability and speed of your network, the file server's work load, and the capabilities and limits of workstation and the applications it runs. Hardware configurations should be researched and evaluated by an experienced computer professional, who should make buying decisions on your particular needs, environment, and resources. Clients & Profits Worldwide can not be responsible for how well Clients & Profits X performs in your environment.

Tips:

Macs and PCs can connect to your database simultaneously, though Macs need to connect to share points using AFP.  For more information on configuring Services for Mac (SFM) to enable AFP connections on a Windows Server, click here.

Clients & Profits can not run on Linux or UNIX workstations.

Performance on wireless networks (e.g., Wi-Fi) may be slower and less stable than a hard-wired network; be sure to use the C&P X trial demo to evaluate your network performance.

Do not use versions of Mac OS X prior to 10.4 (Tiger). For more information, click here.

Every user should have their own copy of the installation on their own hard drive.  Installation on network directories is not recommended.  For this reason, use of Citrix or Terminal Services is unsupported.

Use of virtualization software (e.g., Virtual PC, Parallels) or Boot Camp is unnecessary, since C&P X is fully supported on Mac and Windows.
